Random thoughts for the week – Our lives are about finding our way, and in finding your way as to who you are and how you fit into this world, helping others is a great part of that process that can mash-up and shape who you are, creating open doors you never knew could be opened or stepped through.

In this economy, many of us have friends, family, and acquaintances that are looking for work or have limited income. It is not all about money, it is about your time after work on on the weekends. You all have skills, special and specific skills. Some of you have skills you do not even know you have.

My suggestion is to find a way to help others using your skill and you will be surprised how it enriches the rest of your life. Sometimes you have to think hard, and other times it is right in front of you. Do you know someone that need your skills? It does not have to be much, just that it is something that comes from the heart, like seeing some random people in a nursing home or hospital.

Maybe you have writing skills, design skills, cooking skills, construction, talking on the phone, visiting with them… Think outside the box on this one and your life will be better.

I challenge you.

YourHost.com officially released it’s JW supported 2.0 Streaming Player Generator that streams (iPhone – iPad – Html5) Video On Demand (VOD) and Live streaming solutions.

Due to the unwavering position of Apple NOT to support Flash on their mobile devices, specifically the iPhone – iPad, YourHost.com has coded a player that will allow their CDN customers to stream archived Video On Demand files from the iPhone – iPad. How? it is done through a skewed form of ABR or (Adaptive Bit Rate technology).

Better yet, the player will continue to work well when Apple finally caves and incorporates Flash support on their mobile devices.

All you need to do is encode one more Mp4 file per video, and insert both the Flash and Mp4 file paths into our new player generator.

The player generator then creates the code that you need which you can directly cut and paste into a webpage for viewing. To the delight of web designers and coders, YourHost.com has left the ability of the user to tweak the player to their specific needs.

See the player here at the bottom of the linked page

After careful calculation, I broke down, selected and purchased a MacBook Pro. It was not an easy decision as I use Outlook and Salesforce for business.

Matt, our CTO at YourHost.com guided me through the differences and help to install tools I would need to crossover. After 4 years, my Dell Laptop had crashed and I had Jeremy Simpson, an amazing computer and network guy fix it so I could retain my files, even though I had them on Carbonite.

The main issue was my mail and how Outlook would communicate with Salesforce sending copies of mail I send up to it and associate it with our customers. I found a work around for updating Salesforce by an Australian company, run by Chris Wolcott, called CCRM.com. Chris was very helpful and they use this tool for many other powerful applications, but for me it was one less reason not to use Windows.

There are a few applications that I must have so I had Matt install VM Ware and I purchased a copy of Windows 7, which is quite nice but not as nice and easy and fast as Mac. Note: Do not try this unless your willing to install 8 gigs of ram or more. 3Gigs for Windows and 5Gigs for Mac. I chose the 5Gigs for the Mac OS as I will be in it more than I will with Windows 7. Windows 7 is a resource pig and will now work well under 3Gigs.

I am Two weeks into my Mac and it only gets better and here is a short list of what I like.

Battery life and sleep and wake-up ease

New touch pad

standard Mail program is fast and easy to search

Mobile Me sync between other Macs. I got a Mac Mini for my home so and all is mimicked on both computers.

Ease of Software installation, management, and use

Wi-Fi is stronger

Remote computer logon with both files and screen takeover

Light weight and easier to transport, I got rid of my backpack and trying to move around paperless.

Moving between programs, open programs, and speed from sleep to open the program

Windows 7 works ok and I can have it open at the same time I am on the Mac back and forth all day long.

Stay Tuned….

I found this quite sobering,

Date: January 19, 2010 8:31:31 PM PST
To: undisclosed-recipients:;
Subject: [Fwd: get ready for a whomper]

Currently, the strong El Nino is reaching its peak in the Eastern Pacific, and now finally appears to be exerting an influence on our weather. The strong jet has been apparent for quite some time out over the open water, but the persistent block had prevented it from reaching the coast. Now that the block has dissolved completely, a 200+ kt jet is barreling towards us. Multiple large and powerful storm systems are expected to slam into CA from the west and northwest over the coming two weeks, all riding this extremely powerful jet stream directly into the state. The jet will itself provide tremendous dynamic lift, in addition to directing numerous disturbances right at the state and supplying them with an ample oceanic moisture source. The jet will be at quite a low latitude over much of the Pacific, so these storms will be quite cold, at least initially. Very heavy rainfall and strong to potentially very strong winds will impact the lower elevations beginning late Sunday and continue.

This is where things get even more interesting, though. The models are virtually unanimous in “reloading” the powerful jet stream and forming an additional persistent kink 2000-3000 miles to our southwest after next Sunday. This is a truly ominous pattern, because it implies the potential for a strong Pineapple-type connection to develop. Indeed, the 12z GFS now shows copious warm rains falling between days 12 and 16 across the entire state. Normally, such as scenario out beyond day seven would be dubious at best. Since the models are in such truly remarkable agreement, however, and because of the extremely high potential impact of such an event, it’s worth mentioning now. Since there will be a massive volume of freshly-fallen snow (even at relatively low elevations between 3000-5000 feet), even a moderately warm storm event would cause very serious flooding. This situation will have to be monitored closely. Even if the tropical connection does not develop, expected rains in the coming.

In addition to very heavy precipitation, powerful winds may result from very steep pressure gradients associated with the large and deep low pressure centers expected to begin approaching the coast by early next week. Though it’s not clear at the moment just how powerful these winds may be, there is certainly the potential for a widespread damaging wind event at some point, and the high Sierra peaks are likely to see gusts in the 100-200 mph range (since the 200kt jet at 200-300 mb will essentially run directly into the mountains at some point). The details of this will have to be hashed out as the event(s) draw closer.

In short, the next 2-3 weeks (at least) are likely to be more active across California than any other 2-3 week period in recent memory. The potential exists for a dangerous flood scenario to arise at some point during this interval, especially with the possibility of a heavy rain-on-snow event during late week 2. In some parts of Southern California, a whole season’s worth of rain could fall over the course of 5-10 days. This is likely to be a rather memorable event. Stay tuned…

Some are finding new untapped skills and reinventing themselves. Some important things to consider when reinventing ones self.

Stick with what you know

Do not quit your current job or stream of income until you can replace it

Do you homework, research others that have done what you are considering for more than 2years.

Consider what you could do in your current job to make it better or bring in more business (sometimes this is much more productive and rewarding)

Listen to your gut and the little voice in your head and by all means your wife, husband, or girlfriend.
